Thinking Outside the Box

Like all moving companies in London the majority of our work is based around domestic and office removals. Here at Kiwi Movers though, we understand that ‘moving stuff’ can sometimes be a little mundane, however, like our antipodean hereditary we try to think outside the box and ‘move stuff’ to make things more efficient and stress free for our clients. 

Recently we assisted the Rugby Players Association for their annual awards night and carried out a move that was a little bit different to say the least. Other than the 2.00am start time and operating a fork lift, the entire move included several smaller moves, with drop offs in Slough, Twickenham and at the awards which was held at Battersea Evolution. 
With the help of one of our talented crew members, Hami, who is a very keen videographer, we have made several movies (see our YouTube channel) that offer our customers an insight into some of the services we offer. These include shipping, packing and booking a survey. We like to consider ourselves innovative and forward thinking and with the way social media is going these days we thought we had better lead from the front.

Nationwide Delivery Service

We all have a favourite coffee shop we stop at most days, a preferred hair dresser to get a cut and favourite sports team to support. Here at Kiwi Movers we have found that many clients also have a favourite style and make of furniture, the only problem is that half of the time the warehouse and showrooms are not based in the most accessible places and our clients live a number of hours drive away.

We have recently developed a UK wide network specialising in the delivery of furniture and packages in groupage/part loads nationwide. Our network is extensive and mean we can get your items delivered from the Isle of Skye to Lands End, or even overseas.
Our nationwide delivery service is still based around our personalised approach to place the customer experience at the core of what they do. We will load and unload your furniture using a protective covering and depending where you live, delivery time is between one and five working days.
The groupage service has been a practical delivery method for many of our commercial clients who specialise in boutique and contemporary furniture. They have customers nationwide and instead of delivering the furniture themselves they hand it over to us. It saves them the 10 hour drive, doesn’t cost the world and ensures it gets to their customer in the same condition it was when purchased.

Storage in London

Storage in London

When looking at storage in London you need to decide what suits your interests and needs; will you need long term storage, 24/7 access or once your goods have left your house will you be happy to see the back of them for a years’ time?! You will need to decide whether you require containerised storage or self storage in London.

The differences…

In containerised storage your goods are stored in containers, generally with a volume of 30ft2. The containers are fully waterproof and made of timber. One major positive about containerised storage is that it is cheaper than self storage as the containers are stored off site to avoid the high costs of being in London. Although they are stored offsite they will have a drop off/pick up yard in London. One consideration though about containerised storage is you have to give at least 72 hours’ notice to gain access to your container/s; this is to allow time for your container to be brought back to the London yard, on top of this there will be a £15-£20 fee per container whenever you require access. Containerised storage suits those people who a looking for long term storage (three months or more) and will not require access.

Self storage offers more freedom and flexibility. You can request a unit based on exactly what you require; units start as small as 10ft2 which will fit two boxes up to 300ft2 in volume which will fit a four bedroom house, some facilities offer even bigger 600ft2 units. A positive about self storage in London is you have 24/7 access; you will be given a unique code to enter the storage facility and your unit. The potential downside to this flexibility is that self storage in London is generally more expensive than containerised storage, especially long term. Self storage in London suits those people that frequently require access and/or will only be there for a short space of time.

Rubbish Removal

Rubbish Removal, this is a problem that often occurs in London. Usually when clearing out the flat or house with the annual spring clean or when we get the new sofa or bed and need to dispose of the old one. For most people, they do not own a ‘ute’ as we would call it in New Zealand or suitably big Chelsea Tractor, disposing of your rubbish can either mean multiple trips to the tip/refuse site or calling in a skip or rubbish removal firm. There are however other ways that your junk can become someone else’s treasure. 

Give It Away

Now days there are numerous websites such as Gumtree or or Freeads where you can advertise your sofa, TV etc and someone else will come and collect it. Obviously to do this your items should be in good condition and you would want to include a number of photos. 

Another option is arranging for a charity to pick things up. They will only take items though that are in good condition which they can resell. 

Some councils also offer a free collection service for mattresses, beds etc. Check with your local council about this, as you do not want to leave an unexpected surprise for the bin man!

Alternative to Skips

If you have a lot of rubbish or are doing renovations or building then often people get a skip. Considerations for this include the cost, as you will pay a fixed amount for a load and the parking suspension from the council for the skip. Do your homework on this, as the parking will add a lot of costs on top. It maybe better to arrange for your rubbish to be picked up by a waste carrier to avoid these charges. 

Always use a Licensed Carrier

There are plenty of cowboys out there and getting rid of rubbish isn’t that hard, so always ensure you use a fully licensed waste carrier who will dispose of your rubbish responsibly and will recycle wherever possible.

Are you coming to the end of your tenancy and your flat is looking like a herd of cows have just run through it? And to makes matters worst you can’t really be bothered cleaning up the mess yourself! If this is you then it is highly likely your flat will require a professional clean.

The majority of tenancy agreements require you to leave the property in the same state it was when you first occupied it. It is also becoming common that on the sale of a property it must be professionally cleaned before it is handed over to the new owners.

You probably think why don’t I clean myself and save a couple of hundred quid? Yes you could do this however you will most probably need to hire a steam cleaner for your carpets, window cleaning tools, plus purchase all the cleaning products you’ll need for the oven, fridge, bathroom and toilet. You still might save something in the back pocket but you’ll still have to put in the hours to ensure your house is cleaned to a professional standard.   • Professional cleaning companies offer a variety of options to professionally clean your house. You may want your house professionally cleaned but don’t want the carpets steam cleaned or you may only want the kitchen and bathrooms cleaned and not the rest of your house. Nearly all cleaning companies offer these options plus many more to fit you requirements.
  • The majority of professional cleaning companies have two time slots each day. Either first thing in the morning starting at 8.00am or in the afternoon starting at 1.00pm. This works well if you are moving in the morning as the cleaners can come in after the removals company to ensure the property is spic and span for the new tenants.
At the end of the day, if you are renting, lettings agencies will look to deduct amounts from your bond if the flat you hand back is not up the required standard. What is that worth to you?

Winters coming… and that generally means cheap removals in London. This morning was definitely pretty crisp on the scooter! With the best English summer in 20 years all but over there are a couple of things you should keep in mind coming up to winter to get some cheap removals in London.

End of Tenancy Clean

The end of tenancy clean is one of the main things you need to ensure if you are moving out of rented accommodation, or even just moving home, the end of tenancy clean is one of the things that is often left to the last minute and organising the cleaners. If you are moving from rented accommodation most tenancy agreements stipulate you are required to have the property professionally cleaned with an end of tenancy clean, and you definitely want to make sure you get your bond back!

At Kiwi we recommend that for any end of tenancy clean you use a reputable company, because let’s face it, cheap and cheerful isn’t always the best option when you have a substantial amount of money at stake with a rental bond. So what is the best option then for an end of tenancy clean? There are two options that we recommend, getting either a light clean or a general clean. The light clean covers all the surfaces, walls etc, while a general clean will include all of these plus steam cleaning of carpets, oven de-grease and curtains. Typically we recommend the general clean, as most people simply do not have the time to do the work themselves, and moving is stressful enough. If you do have the time though, why not get the gloves on and get stuck in doing the work yourself. You can hire carpet cleaning machines very easily and elbow grease is free! If you are unhappy with any aspects of your clean, a reputable company that you use for the end of tenancy clean should fix any problem areas for you free of charge. 

Ultimately your decision on which cleaning service to use for the end of tenancy clean will depend on your budget and the time you have available. Just be careful though because if you do take a few shortcuts and the landlord or management company are unhappy, you may end up facing a far larger bill than the cost of a end of tenancy clean with deductions from your rental bond
