Make handles in all of your boxes

A top tip by Dave Hax is to make handy handles for all of your moving boxes to make them easier to carry. It takes just seconds and the use of a knife or pair of scissors to do. All you need to do is cut three sides of a rectangle and fold upwards and voilà! Handy handle. Just don’t make it too wide or large or you could destabilise the structure or strength of the box. Use towels and sheets to wrap your plates

Unfortunately, that usually means that in the first few days in your new home, you can’t find any of the essentials you need – not even to make a cup of tea. The kettle, your hair brush and even the toilet roll is buried at the bottom of goodness knows which box.

Think of an open-first box as a survival kit. It’ll keep you sane as you gradually unpack and find homes for all your stuff, and save you having to buy everything afresh.

Packing tips for your open-first box – what to include

Before you start packing, make yourself some lists. This not only makes your feel productive (even if you haven’t actually done anything yet) but it also organises your workload. Make a separate list for your open-first box for moving house, including essentials such as:
